Good Budget Collar
The PetSafe Yard and Park Trainer (PDT00-12470) is a full featured system at a budget price. For under $150 you get all the features you would want for a basic obedience training collar and decent quality. The primary tradeoff for the low price is the older NiMH battery.
Full Featured Collar
The PetSafe Yard and Park trainer is a full-featured collar. Both the transmitter and the receiver are rechargeable. The transmitter has a 400 yard range. And using the basic transmitter you can control up to 3 training collars.
400 Yard Range
The transmitter has a real-world range over 400 yards. This is much more than we would expect for a collar of this price, and all you would ever need in a basic obedience training collar.
The PetSafe Yard and Park trainer is a rebadged version of the SportDog 400 Field trainer at a discount price. You get the higher quality SportDog collar for a significant discount over the already well priced SportDog. The collar gives you the most bang-for-your-buck, with a price just over $100.
Both the collar and the remote use an older NiMH battery with long charge times, shorter life and a heavier weight than the newer lithium batteries. We would strongly prefer a Lithium Ion battery.

3 Dog Transmitter
The controller has three buttons, two on the face on and one on the side. The buttons which can be programmed, using a toggle on the underside of the controller, to perform a range of different function. In a typical program, one button will be used for positive tone, one for negative tone, and one for continuous correction button.
There is also the option to program one of the buttons to a boost function to correct the dog at two levels higher than the regular correction – but if you do that you can only have one of the two tones.
8 Correction Levels
Eight correction levels are available, set by rotating a dial on the top of the transmitter remote. This is not a lot of correction levels compared to some collars that have 100+ levels, but it allows enough customization to get the job done and you will be able to find a level that gets the dog's attention without overwhelming the dog.
Walkie-Talkie Style Transmitter
The Yard and Park trainer has a typical walkie-talkie form factor. The transmitter fits well in the hand, although is a little on the small size. The buttons are well positioned and fall under your thumb. The unit is well made and seems more in line with the higher quality SportDog units than the typical PetSafe.
No Instantaneous Correction
The correction button triggers a continuous type, with the correction staying active while the button is pressed (to a maximum of eight seconds when the safety timeout kicks in). A useful feature missing on this collar is an instantaneous correction, that gives the dog a quick zap as this is what you will use the most in training. You can get a similar effect by pressing the continuous correction button and releasing quickly, but a dedicated button makes this easier and more consistent.
The PetSafe Yard and Park has two different tones. This lets you use one tone as a warning, and the second tone as a reward to let the dog know when they have done well.
The transmitter has no on/off switch and automatically goes into a sleep mode when not in use. With a full charge the controller gets around 60 hours of field time before needing to be recharged.
The correction collar is basic rectangular module. At over 3 inches wide and over 5 ounces, it is one of the heavier collars and is only suitable for dogs over 30 pounds.
On / Off Button
The collar has a single button to power the collar on and off. We prefer the collars activated with a button-less magnetic switch as these are less prone to damage, but this kind of feature is not expected in a budget collar.
The collar comes with standard sized ½ inch prongs fitted. Optional longer prongs for long hair dogs are available for an extra $10, but are not included in the basic package. We would prefer long prongs to be included free, but at this price point it is not expected.
Vinyl Collar Band
The collar has a removable collar band. The band is made of a vinyl like rubber and fastens using a buckle style collar.
The side of the collar contains a status light that blinks when the collar is on, and flashes to acknowledge when a command is received from the transmitter.
Range and Correction Strength
400 Yard Range
The PetSafe Yard and Park transmitter demonstrated a range 400 in our real word testing. This is more than enough range for a casual obedience training collar, and gives you plenty of power in reserve for dealing with obstacles.
?? Correction Strength
The peak correction strength for the Yard and Park is ??? milliwatts. This is powerful enough for 90% of pet dogs (e.g. up to 100 lb labrador). In a few cases involving particularly low sensitivity dogs (most commonly seen in gaurdian/fighting breeds such as American Pitbulls or German Shepherd), a stronger collar would be recommended.
NiMH Rechargeable Battery
Rechargeable Collar & Transmitter
Both the transmitter and collar on the PetSafe Yard and Park are completely rechargeable. The collar and transmitter are charged by plugging the charging cord into ports on the devices.
12 Hour Charge Time
The systems uses the old NiMH battery technology. These batteries are heavier and bulkier with a longer 12 hour charge time. When recharging, there is no timer or indicator to signal when the charge is complete so you need to time the charging yourself.
The iQ includes a lanyard for wearing the transmitter around the neck. The lanyard attached to our preferred location on the the bottom of the transmitter, keeping the lanyard cord out of the way when you are using the transmitter.
No Tester Tool
The Dogtra iQ does not include a tester tool to check if the collar is working. Without the tester if you are concerned the collar is not working, you either have to zap yourself, or find someone gullible.
One Year Warranty
The Dogtra iQ series is covered by a one year full warranty. This is less than the two year warranty provided on most Dogtra product, but is in line with most of the industry. We find that the Dogtra collars are in the top echelon in terms of quality and issues in the normal course of use is rare.
Highly Recommended Training Collar
The Dogtra iQ is an excellent full featured collar. The collar is small enough that it can be used on any dogs over 12 pound. The collar features a lithium polymer rechargeable battery. There are 100 correction levels going high enough to handle any non-stubborn dog. Build quality is high. And the price is under $200.
We think this collar beats out the mid-range Dogtra collars which cost nearly 50% more. A highly recommended general purpose obedience training collar for dogs.
